Paris Catacombs history
The Catacombs are part of the of network of tunnels which made up the old underground limestone quarries below Paris.
Towards the end of the 18th century part of the quarries were used as a municipal ossuary (if you will a « dumping ground » for human bones). The remains of about six million people from different Parisian cemeteries were moved here for public health as well as economic reasons.
