Sagrada Familia

The Casa Lleó Morera, a building designed by modernism architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, is located at Passeig de Gràcia 35 in the Eixample district of Barcelona, very close to Gaudi’s Casa Batlló, with its unmistakable façade and roof.

Check out our website and pick the day and time that best fits your schedule to visit Casa Batlló in Barcelona

Blue is one of the predominant colours used in the Casa Batlló, and was Gaudi’s way of creating a marine ambiance for visitors.

You can get skip the line tickets to the Casa Batlló on our website. Booking your tickets in advance is easy and will help you make the most of your visit to Barcelona. Make sure to also visit Gaudí’s last building, the Casa Perdrera, located in the same street as the Casa Batlló, and easily accessible by public transportation.

The Casa Batlló was originally built in 1877 by Emilio Sala Cortés (one of Gaudí’s architecture professors). This was before the introduction of electric light to the city. In 1903, the house was purchased by the Batlló family. They granted full creative freedom to Gaudí, putting him in charge of a project that initially entailed demolishing the building. Gaudí decided, however, to fully renovate Casa Batlló. Work started on the façade in the early 1900’s. The façade has three distinct but harmoniously integrated sections.
While Gaudí was working on the Casa Batlló, other prominent architects were also reforming houses on the same street while competing for urban awards organised by the Barcelona City Council.

The contrasting styles gave rise to the street being called the Illa de la Discòrdia in Catalan which being a play on words has various translations including "block of discord", "apple of discord and “bone of contention” depending on the linguistic interpretation.

The façade of the Casa Batlló is a unique testament to Gaudí’s fertile imagination! One of the most interesting features of the facade is a tower with a cross of four arms pointing north, south, east and west.

The soon-to-be Casa Batlló was purchased by Mr Josep Batlló y Casanovas in 1903 and fully renovated by Antoni Gaudí. After 1950, Casa Batlló changed hands on numerous occasions, and was owned by both companies and individuals. Its current owners fully restored the house and in 1995, they opened it to the public. Today, Casa Batlló is a UNESCO World Heritage site, one of Barcelona’s architectural icons and a must-see for those who want to discover Gaudí’s work and experience the best of modernism architecture up close. Discover three others emblematics sites of Barcelona : the Sagrada Familia, the Park Güell and the Casa Mila on our website!

Purchase your tickets online and learn some interesting facts about Casa Batlló:

Legend has it that Saint George killed a terrible dragon with his lance in order to save a princess and the local people from the animal’s wrath. One interpretation is that the story inspired the roof’s design, where the top turret represents the Saint’s lance embedded in the dragon’s back, and the bone-shaped columns apparently commemorating its victims. In fact, throughout its history, Casa Batlló has been known as the house of bones or the house of the dragon.

Some interpret the interiors as an aquatic landscape, evoking Monet’s series of oil paintings, “The Water Lilies”, due to the colourful use of ceramic glaze and fragments of broken glass.

During your visit you will learn how Gaudí collaborated with the very best artisans of the time, working with wrought iron, wood, stained glass, ceramic tiles and stone ornaments, in order to achieve this marvel of design!
Step into the entrance hall and discover a fantastic world with vaulted walls and a spectacular wooden staircase that leads to the noble floor, the room where Batlló’s study used to be. And don’t forget to check out the beautiful view from the roof terrace before finishing your visit!
