Located in St. Mark's Square, the Basilica of the same name is a highlight of the Venetian landscape. Its imposing Byzantine domes, visible from the sea, dominate the St. Mark plaza. The city's main religious centre, the Basilica was built in the 9th century. Its architecture reflects the many commercial and cultural exchanges that took place in and around the Mediterranean Basin and the decisive role the city of Venice played within this region.
There are indeed several decorative elements and building materials imported from Greece and the Middle East.
Inside the Basilica, many mosaics, works of art and ornate gilding recall the splendour and opulence of the ancient Republic of Venice, which until the 17th century was one of the richest nations in Europe.
