Located overlooking Omaha beach (one of the landing beaches of the Normandy Invasion), it contains 9,387 marble graves and was the first American cemetery of the Second World War to be established in Europe following the end of hostilities.

    Accompanied by our expert local guide, during this tour you will get to visit the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial and learn the history of the D-Day landings that took place on June 6th, 1944.

    The memorial within the grounds contains the names of 1,557 American soldiers who lost their lives during the campaign but whose bodies were never located or identified. In the open arc of the memorial facing the graves area is the 22-foot bronze statue, "The Spirit of American Youth Rising from the Waves" by the American sculptor, Donald de Lue.

    The cemetery has some notable interments, including both sons of President Theodore Roosevelt, one of whom was killed during WWI but whose remains were exhumed and relocated to the cemetery to lie beside his younger brother. The two Niland brothers of "Saving Private Ryan" fame as well are also buried there.

    This tour will be of special interest to those interested in the history of the war and its associated sites.

    Good to know

    Don't be late! Try to be at the meeting point 15 minutes before the tour starts.

    The meeting point for your guide is just outside the visitors' centre not far from the carpark serving the cemetery.
