Description
The Basilica was built in the 9th century and is the main religious center of the city. Its remarkable architecture was inspired by several Mediterranean trends, including white marble from the Middle East as well as some elements of Greek and Byzantine origin. The Basilica’s nickname, Chiesa d'Oro (The Golden Church), refers to the gold used in the design and decoration of this holy place.
The upper part of the building is covered with magnificent mosaics covering a combined an area of almost 8,000 square meters. By Vaporetto boat (Line 1, Get off at San Marco Vallaresso)
By water taxi - Ask to get off at Todaro. Once off the boat, head to St. Mark's Square.

Of course, the city is out of this world, but that doesn't mean one should pass by St Mark's Basilica without visiting it. We were very happy to have paid a bit more to skip the lines, as even in this season, a lot of people were waiting.
