The bulk of its collection is made up of European paintings dating from the fourteenth century up to the beginning of the nineteenth century, with masterpieces by renowned artists such as Raphael, Rembrandt, Goya and Poussin.

The building, designed by the architect Juan de Villanueva in 1785, also houses some 6400 drawings and more than 1000 sculptures. Only 1300 works are however on permanent display, with the other works in the collection often on loan to partner institutions.
